The Department of Geology at GGDC in Pedong stands as a unique academic cornerstone in Northern West Bengal, being the only college in the region to offer a dedicated Geology program since 2015. Staffed by three dedicated faculty members, the department is well-equipped with a petrology lab containing microscopes, a computer lab for students and practical classes, and a classroom showcasing diverse rock, mineral, and fossil samples. Graduates from the department have predominantly pursued higher education, advancing to master's and doctoral programs at various esteemed institutes, while others are employed in professions such as mining and exploration, school education, or the banking sector. Committed to experiential learning, the department regularly conducts field visits, allowing students to engage with natural and social environments. Additionally, the department utilizes specialized instruments, mainly a projector and a sandbox instrument, to develop an understanding of relevant phenomena related to earth sciences through the use of Information and Communication Technology tools and analog modeling. Faculty members actively contribute to the academic community as members of the Affiliating University's Board of Studies, playing a crucial role in curriculum development. The department initially followed a 1+1+1 system until 2017-18, transitioned to the university's CBCS system in 2018-19, and has recently adopted the Four-Year Undergraduate Program in the 2023-24 session. This continuous evolution and commitment to academic excellence make the Geology Department at GGDC a distinguished entity in the region.
